THE PUBLIC (2018)
Starring Emilio Estevez, Jena Malone, Gabrielle Union; directed by Emilio Estevez; 122 minutes – Rated PG-13
A librarian helps a group of homeless people take refuge from a brutal winter night by staging a sit-in at the public library. A misunderstanding causes his noble act to wrongly escalate into a hostage situation with a political candidate and a TV reporter stoking the drama for their own agendas.
STORM CENTER (1956)
Starring Bette Davis, Brian Keith, Kim Hunter; Directed by Daniel Taradash; 85 minutes
A small town librarian stands up to local pressure to remove a controversial book from the shelves - on principal, not out of sympathy for its perspective. This reflection on the rights and responsibilities of citizens was a timely response to Anti-Communist sentiment in the 1950s.
